Recurring leukemia

Started: 30 July 2019
Ends: 23 September 2019

In the hospital bathroom was where I cut my son’s hair. It was coming out in handfuls, so I did it for the better. Again, we’re here, in the hospital ward, coming yet again for the necessary chemo, again we’re standing face to face with death. 2 months and 5 days - that’s how long we had left before achieving the ideal 5-year remission period, which would have meant a full recovery from leukemia. Instead of that, we have a reoccurrence and a need to buy an extremely expensive drug, Blincyto, and only a month to raise the funds. I, as his father, am asking you: please help save my son!

The children’s ward of oncology is not the dream location to spend a vacation for a 11-year-old boy. It’s a battle field, where small warriors fight the biggest battle of their short lives. Everyone wants to win, but not everyone can… strapped to the drip, sometimes hid away in the isolation ward. Those with the longest battles we’ll call veterans, others had only just arrived, still not aware of what was awaiting them. During the day, the parents watch over them; during the night, they sleep beside them on mattresses. We don’t want to be here, nobody wants to be here.

Arthur fell sick 7 years ago. The nightmare, which we went through for months of fighting for our sons life, is incomparable to anything else. Constant fear, helpless watching your child suffer, waiting for the test results… Finally, we did it - remission, victory. The fire was extinguished, but still we trembled. 5 years was needed to accept the child as fully cancer-free. We were close, we had only needed sixty-few days…

The sickness came back on the 25th of May that year, with huge back pains again. Arthur practices football, and it wasn’t easy before to leave the pitch. This time again, he had to quit playing. A monster, serious leukemia arrives once again with one goal - to take away my son. Arthur underwent his first chemo in Chorzow, later in Krakow. Unfortunately, his body didn’t react way to the treatment…

Cancer cells are still present in my son’s blood, and in order to get rid of them, he has to add to the therapy an expensive and non-refundable drug, Blincyto. The first cycle must begin at the end of August and costs more than 260 thousand PLN. The cost knocked us off our feet… how can we raise so much money in one month?  The awareness that there exists a drug that can save my child’s life, but is financially unobtainable, overwhelms us. There’s no other way, I have to ask for help.

At the ward, everyone supports each other, for we’re all fighting the same battle. Some days tears flow like rivers, and some days, we have to smile, joke around, so as to make others feel better. At the end of the day each of us is alone with our own thoughts. I’m a grown man, yet I stand here helpless, ready to do anything to save my son. That’s what a father is for. That’s my job: to beat the embarrassment, to beat the fear, to shout for help… Please, hear my shouts. Arthur has to live…

Grzegorz - dad.
