Shock ... leukemia came back. Let's save a young life!
CAR-T treatment at the Clinic of Erlangen University in Germany - last hope
Ends at: 15 July 2019
Rodzinie, siostrze i bliskim składamy najszczersze wyrazy współczucia.
Here we are again. Hospital room, blood transfusion and diagnosis that breaks hearts - leukemia came back with a second relapse. In April, the results were good, first months after the bone marrow transplant allowed us to believe that this is the end, that we won! Unfortunately... Now it is even worse. In Poland we have exhausted all methods that give any hope. However, there is hope! A clinic in Germany qualified Adam for CAR-T therapy, which must start as soon as possible, the date is booked - July 9 ...
I am asking for help for my son with all my heart. We will fight to the end and believe in winning. There is no other way.
You probably remember Adam. Last year, we asked for help for the first time. Leukemia gave its first relapse, bone marrow transplantation was necessary, supported by unrefunded in Poland, very expensive Blincyto therapy. It worked! We will be grateful for this for the rest of our lives. ... Unfortunately, leukemia is a nasty enemy, it does not know pity. And so we are here again, because without help and huge money, we will only have to wait for the worst ...
September 2018 – this is when Adam got a chance for a new life, the new bone marrow and medicine were to defeat the cancer. First months after the bone marrow transplant gave us hope for a happy future - every few weeks the bone marrow was checked and the results were in line with expectations! We knew that we could not really be comfortable, but with each passing week joy was more and more boldly entering our lives, and Adam's life. He's only 20 years old, and he's had such a nightmare. It was supposed to be all good!
Unfortunately... in the bone marrow examination of 6 May 2019, a second recurrence of acute lymphoblastic leukemia was diagnosed. Our painstakingly rebuilt world collapsed in a moment. We could not believe it, those are the moments where denial seems the only option ... But it only lasted for a moment. We did not have much time, the disease is not going to wait. On the same day, when we got to know the diagnosis, together with doctors we started looking for help abroad, other methods of treatment, including clinical trials of advanced methods.
In this situation, treatment options are becoming less and less available, and the most advanced ones, which give the most chances for recovery, are not yet available in Poland. However, there is a method recently spreading worldwide - CAR-T immunotherapy, which is a personalized therapy based on modification of the patient's T-lymphocytes, so that they are directed against cancer cells. So they are to kill the blasts, and free Adam of cancer! This is a new, very promising therapy and – it is no secret - my son’s only chance. In Europe, the first CAR-T treatment procedure was approved last year, and in the US a year earlier. We found a clinic in Germany, we sent results, we went for qualifying tests. It worked, they gave us a chance!
Adam has been accepted into clinical trial, but we need to cover all additional costs including long hospitalization in Germany, medical examinations ... We do not have much time, because therapy must start at the beginning of July! If we do not pay at least a part, they will not accept Adam, the chance will be lost. And this is a chance for life ...
Adam is brave, although everyday life has again become hell. In Germany, when we went only for a qualifying visit, the results were so bad that we had to immediately fly to Poland for another chemo. Fear, terror, pain - there are no words that could describe it. I do not wish such experiences to anyone ... Adam is still so young, he has passion, he is extremely sensitive, he loves music, he loves life.
We are asking for help for our son, for a chance for help ...
Małgorzata and Andrzej, parents of Adam.
