33rd WOŚP Grand Finale

This time we play for paediatric oncology and haematology!  The funds gathered by the Foundation will be used to buy equipment paediatric oncology and haematology facilities. We are planning to equip 18 paediatric wards, 17 hospices, 5 neurosurgical oncology clinics, 6 surgical oncology clinics and 4 pathomorphology units.

When are we playing?

33rd WOŚP Grand Finale is taking place on 26 January 2025 and you can start gathering funds online from 17 December to 27 January 2025.

Why paediatric oncology and haematology?

The decision about the main objective of the event was reached by the WOŚP Foundation after discussions with experts in paediatric oncology, pathomorphology and haematology who highlighted the fact that cancer is the second leading cause of death in children in Poland, following accidents at the top of the list. Each year around 1100 children are diagnosed with cancer and 3000 of them continue intensive treatment. With the development of oncology, the cure rate is above 80% which means that Poland has the same results as Western Europe countries and USA.

Treating paediatric cancer requires an enormous number of equipment and diagnostic resources. The funds gathered during the 33rd WOŚP Grand Finale will allow to further equip medical facilities which will result in more effective and better paced treatment for children fighting with cancer. The Foundation supports also the treatment of non-cancerous hematologic conditions which are one of the most frequent chronic diseases in children.

In the scope of the 33rd Grand Finale, WOŚP is planning to buy:

❤️For Surgical Oncology, among others: laparoscopic sets, robots for surgical oncology, cystoscopes, ultrasonic aspirators and digital portable X-ray machines
❤️For Neurosurgery, among others: exoscopes, bipolar coagulation
❤️For Oncology diagnostics, among others: equipment for magnetic brain mapping, MRI scanners, ultrasound machines
❤️For Pathomorphology: among others. intraoperative MRI scanners, tissue processors, histological slide scanners
❤️For Hospices among others: oxygen concentrators, anti-decubitus mattresses

WOŚP and oncology

The WOŚP Foundation has been supporting paediatric oncology for a long time. Due to the fundraiser in 2009 and 2010, we were able to enhance the quality of paediatric oncology diagnostics. At that time, the problem concerned the lack of equipment and awareness among parents, general practitioners and the growing need for systemic changes that would simplify the process of using diagnostic facilities. In order to fulfil our objective in a coordinated and successful manner, we established Narodowy Program Diagnostyki Onkologicznej Dzieci (National Oncology Diagnostics Program for Children), that allowed our Foundation to equip the key paediatric oncology clinics in Poland with advanced diagnostic devices.

Until now, as a result of the Foundation’s endeavours, more than 1005 machines were made available (among others: 93 ultrasound machines, 3 MRI and 6 CT scanners) worth in total 107.8 million zlotys. The aim of four WOŚP Grand Finales (3rd, 17th, 18th, 23rd) was to buy equipment for oncology clinics. One of the most important purchases was the first PET-CT scanner in Poland, dedicated to children, which in 2022 became available in Centrum Zdrowia Dziecka. This innovative machine, worth almost 16 M zlotys, is used for detailed diagnostics and allows to monitor cancer treatment.

During 32 Grand Finales WOŚP raised almost 2 billion zlotys and bought 72 thousand machines. The previous fundraiser – in January 2024 – was dedicated to lung diseases. Due to the engagement of groups of volunteers and supporters, we managed to raise 281 879 118.07 PLN.
