Situation in areas threatened with flooding

The southern regions of Poland are facing extremely difficult times. Raging downpours and rapid river overflows have flooded homes, turning safe havens into places full of despair and uncertainty. In an instant, people lost their entire life's work, and their future is in question.

A state of natural disaster has been declared in some counties. The situation is very difficult, thousands of homes have been destroyed, and the losses are increasing. Dramatic images from flooded towns and villages remind us how close we are to tragedy.

Since the beginning of the rainfall, several hundred millimeters of rain have fallen in southwestern Poland. In many places in the Lower Silesian and Opole provinces, the highest daily rainfall totals in the history of measurements were recorded. The rainfall total approached the level that we have been recording in measurements for 2/3 of the year. So much rain had not fallen in such a short time even during the memorable flood in 1997.

Many families have already lost everything, and we know that this is not the end. The water may yet continue to flow for couple of days time leaving behind devastated cities, towns and villages. It may take many of years to restore stability to the flooded areas and rebuilding life after the flood will require strength and support.
