Alex has returned home with a repaired heart!
At the end of March, Alex successfully underwent tricuspid valve surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. The surgeons implanted an artificial ring which narrowed the diameter of the natural tricuspid valve ring. Alex also underwent the plasty of valve leaflet, which were partly attached to the surface of the heart muscles, some of their heart strings shortened or present redundantly, preventing the leaflets’ movement and closure.
Thanks to the precise surgical intervention and the attentive care of the medical team, Alex recovered very quickly from the operation and was discharged from hospital after just a few days. Due to some ECG abnormalities, we stayed longer in London waiting for the cardiac follow-up, the results of which eventually proved positive. The proportion between the previously greatly enlarged right atrium and right ventricle has returned to almost normal. The regurgitation in the tricuspid valve could not be completely eliminated, however, now the small degree of leakage does not have a negative impact on the functioning of the body. Alex's heart is safe, but it will still require regular (though less frequent) check-ups.
Alex returned to Poland with a recommendation to gradually return to all activities, including active play and sports. The next year is crucial for his heart to get back in shape and to assess the direction of his cardiac treatment in the future. Alex is currently receiving physiotherapy and osteopathic treatments. He feels good and is full of optimism for the future.
All of this was possible thanks to you – everyone who supported our fund raiser, both financially and by sending information about it to big-hearted people all across the globe. During the recent very stressful months, you have also provided us with emotional and moral support, wishes and good thoughts.
Although our words are so little to reflect our emotions and gratitude for all the help we have received from you, thank you so much! All this time we felt that we were not alone!
