Fundraiser description

Donate medicine and oxygen to help me fight CF. Andrzej is one of the oldest people in Poland with cystic fibrosis (CF). He learned about his illness just eleven years ago, and his route to diagnosis was long and rocky. Today, Andrzej is fighting for his life.

Every day, cystic fibrosis takes away more of his life and breath. From the beginning. Andrzej has fought illness – or rather illnesses – all his life. It’s a miracle that he’s alive. Most of his life, his parents and later he himself tried to figure out what his sickness could be. As a small child, his mother would have to carry him often, when his legs gave out and became jelly-like. At that time, doctors diagnosed Andrzej with meningitis. Soon after, they realized that it couldn’t be meningitis, but they had no idea what he was suffering from.

As a teenager he often was hospitalized and spent time in sanatoriums, where the doctors suspected tuberculosis. During Military Medical Commission Health Tests, Andrzej’s lungs were so weak that the Military Medical Doctors stated that he only had one year left to live. It wasn’t until after his nephew was born that it became apparent that cystic fibrosis runs in his family. Later hospital studies of the illness revealed that those with CF had the same symptoms that had troubled Andrzej for years. Despite so obviously demonstrating all these symptoms, he had never been properly treated for the illness. Eleven years ago, Andrzej went to the Cystic Fibrosis clinic in Gdansk for the first time and had his diagnosis confirmed. Now he knows that CF is what slowly saps his ability to breathe, as he has become dependent on oxygen. He knows that the illness is untreatable, but thanks to the medicine it can be made more manageable.

Andrzej Czarnojan

More about Andrzej: He holds a master’s in civil engineering with a concentration in building and engineering constructions. Andrzej counts on the support of construction and civil engineers. He studied at the Polytechnic University of Gdansk from Oct. 1986 to Oct. 1993, despite needing to take two health sabbaticals. Because of his debilitating illness, he was never able to work in his dream profession. Outside of academics, his dual passions are photography and bird watching.

Unfortunately, because of the pandemic and fear of infection, Andrzej stays home. These days, he leaves the house only for hospital visits. During the last year, Andrzej has been struck with isolation and loneliness. Your support will raise his spirit and give him hope that there are people still thinking of him. Currently. Since October 2020, Andrzej’s health has significantly worsened. Daily activities are difficult, and he is reliant on oxygen therapy. Every day he loses more of his strength. Andrzej’s dream is to treat not just the symptoms but the illness overall. Fortunately, now there is new medicine available in Poland which can give him the chance for a return to health. Unfortunately, the medicine is not refundable, and an annual treatment amounts to about one million zlotych. Polish zloty (about 240 000 USD). Besides this medicine, Andrzej needs stationary and portable oxygen concentrators, as well as financing for other medicines and physiotherapy.

He alone is not able to cover the cost of his treatment from his small disability pension. Only with your assistance does he have a chance at a longer life. Please help us help him.
