Antek was born with a rare developmental defect of the right ear, called microtia with atresia. It causes severe hearing loss in the right ear.

After Antek was born, we consulted several doctors and centers in Poland to determine treatment options - unfortunately, we heard everywhere that treatment options are limited, and unilateral hearing loss is not a problem, because he can hear properly in the other ear. Over time, it turned out that this is not true - unilateral hearing loss significantly hinders functioning, affects the child's safety and leads to other dysfunctions.

Children with unilateral hearing loss are unable to locate the direction from which the sound is coming, which is why they are more likely to have accidents, e.g. in traffic accidents, they find it more difficult to function in everyday life, and they have trouble understanding words addressed to them in "everyday" noise. Difficulties in locating the sound source and understanding in noise are also not solved by the bone conduction hearing device that Antek has been wearing for some time.

The solution to these problems is the opening of the ear canal along with middle ear surgery and the associated auricle reconstruction. No one performs such complex procedures in Poland or Europe, the only chance is an operation in a clinic in the USA, which is one of two clinics in the world specializing in comprehensive surgical treatment of this type of disease. Antek was qualified by this clinic for reconstruction surgery, with a very good prognosis for a significant improvement in hearing. To obtain the best treatment results, younger children are usually operated on (as long as the nerve conduction pathways in the affected ear are still functioning), therefore it is necessary to perform the operation as soon as possible.
