Fundraiser description

Diabetes. The disease that has no regrets. We cannot find the right words to explain our 9-year-old son, that he must live with that his whole life.

We’ve been fighting to stop the disease. To end the deterioration of our son’s health, who has an entire life in front of him…

Everything started last year, in December. During the tests used to diagnose his heavy, recurring headaches, we found out that Jegor had high blood sugar. He received a directed referral to the hospital. We heard the diagnosis in January this year. Jegor has type 1 diabetes.

I will always remember that day. Our lives got separated into the ones “before” and “after” the disease. We had to explain to the 9-year-old boy, that from now on, the needles and the pain caused by the daily injections would become his bitter reality. Rising and falling of his blood sugar levels are very common, which causes irreversible damage in his body. Heart and blood vessel diseases, kidney diseases, nerve damage—these are just examples of side effects. Currently, the damage to the blood vessels of his eyes has started. Its consequences may be tragic.

A diabetes is a disease that keeps you company for 24/7 and, unfortunately, there is no cure for it. The medications are for life. It’s an autoimmune illness, which means that from unexplainable reasons a body starts to destroy its pancreatic beta cells, which leads to insulin deficiency.

The disease is developing in front of our eyes! We must fight!

Fortunately, the diabetes in Jegor was recognised in an early stage, so there is a possibility to stop its further progression.

The T cell therapy is applied in children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes—more or less within the two months from discovering the disease. It is an innovative method discovered by the clinical research doctors from Medical University of Gdańsk, Poland. It is based on activating production of a body’s own lymphocytes—in this case, immune regulatory T cells (Treg cells). It’s a small group of cells with the ability to control immune response. This is a first therapy which suppress the pancreatic islet destruction and protects the beta cells, which produce insulin.

With this treatment, Jegor’s pancreas might preserve some of its functions, and it will release its own insulin into the bloodstream, which will minimise the risk of type 1 diabetes side effects.

This is the only real solution for Jegor! He was qualified by the doctors for the Treg treatment. The T cell application is planned for the beginning of April.  There is no time to lose! Every day, his immune system destroys new pancreatic beta cells, which can be saved thanks to Treg therapy. That is why, we have little time left to raise such a huge amount of money.

The cost of the treatment is enormous. We need almost 200 000 zlotys! It’s a large amount and the only solution to stop the progress of the disease. As parents, we need to do everything to save our son! Please help us! Stay with us, give us a chance and a hope…
