Kalinka was born with a defect in her legs which develops with age. Unless she undergoes major surgery, our daughter will be confined to a wheelchair. Kalinka was six months old when we noticed that something was wrong with her feet. They were deformed, lithe as if there were no bones inside.

We have consulted the case with several of orthopedists but with no result. Each of them diagnosed differently, and some of them seemed to have no clue what was going on with our child nor did they knew what to do next. For six months we had been putting Kalinka in a cot in a special, stiff knee-high orthosis. Kalinka was crying because she could not sleep on her tummy which is her favorite position. Each day for a couple of minutes we were tormenting her with exhausting and painful exercises which she hated. Still, there had been no improvement. Kalinka must wear complicated orthopedic footwear. Distorted feet and unstable, lopsided knees make it extremely difficult for her to move – she constantly stumbles and falls. She cannot keep up with the other children on the playground. Sometimes she just sits on the bench sadly, saying that she cannot do it anymore. Even during short walks her legs hurt.

We knocked on every door to find help. And finally, we got to the Paley Institute. The visit lasted nearly an hour. The doctor looked at Kalinka’s legs for a long time, not only examined her feet but also her body posture and how she walked. It turned out that Kalinka had a problem not only with her feet but also with knees and elbows. It turned out that she must undergo surgery and she needs to have a fragment of the fibula cut. The fibula is too long, therefore, it causes the instability of the leg. Next, the calcaneus must be connected to the bone. It is necessary to cut the metatarsal bones at the front and insert a special wedge that prevents the foot from “running” inside.

Complex surgery will be carried out on both legs at once. After that, our daughter is going to have a long rehabilitation. Our path to full recovery and joyful agility will be difficult but there is no choice for us than to seek help because if Kalinka does not undergo surgery she won’t be able to walk   on her own and for our family, this is an unacceptable scenario.

That’s why we ask you to help us save our daughter’s health.
