That day, I invited some friends over for a barbecue to celebrate the end of the summer and my friend Maciej's new dream job in the Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine. He was happy that his financial problems would be over and he would finally go on a vacation. Unfortunately, fate took it away from him, and it's just heartbreaking.

We decided to go inside a garden pool dug deep into the ground, which gave a sense of security when taking a plunge. Maciej jumped in first. When I emerged from the water, Maciej was drowning! He floated on the surface face down like a buoy. I thought I wouldn't be able to save him on time. 

When I held his head above the water, he told me he felt numb from the chest below and had trouble breathing. We stayed in the water with him to prevent him from further spinal cord injuries and waited for an ambulance to pull him out of the pool. 

Maciej was rushed to the hospital in Głogów with a broken neck, C5 fracture, paraplegia, and spinal shock symptoms. After examination, he was transferred to Legnica, where he underwent surgery. 

After the procedure, he could only move his head, shoulders, and arms. That's all. Disasters fell on him one after another. His world collapsed because of one mistake... 

Two weeks after the accident, during rehabilitation, he developed a catheter-related infection and sepsis. Due to a critical condition, he was transferred to the ICU. We prayed for him to keep fighting so that he regained everything he had lost in tragic circumstances. His chances of survival were low, though... The doctors put him in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator. It all sounds like a nightmare! Only yesterday we were a group of best friends, and now one of us was fighting for life!...

Thankfully, Maciek's condition has recently improved, and he has been weaned off a ventilator, although inserting a tracheostomy tube was still necessary. 

He requires intense physical therapy and exercises that cost 30,000 zlotys a month. We must also adapt the apartment to his needs. He will also require a wheelchair in the future. The medical consultations, examinations, and treatment are expensive. No one expected such tragedy to happen or was prepared for such expenses. 

We have been waiting for cerebral edema to reduce so the doctors can assess the chances of regaining sensation in the hands. Intense and effective physical therapy is an essential factor, as well! Sadly, Maciej has only a 1-2% chance of walking again... 

Maciej and I have been friends for over 18 years - we went to the same class in junior high. We spent much time together - riding a bike, playing basketball, doing archery and airgun shooting, going to the swimming pool, and kayaking. We never argued, and I could always count on him. He is very secretive and rarely talks about his feelings. 

He's a great person, friend, and son. He didn't break down when he lost his mom at a young age. Instead, he supported his dad and closest family. He never refused to help anyone. A while ago, he adopted a sick cat. He asked about it even when he was on a ventilator!

I remember him saying he was proud to be an honorary blood donor so he could save someone's life... 

Now he is the one who needs help. Please do not be indifferent to his tragedy! We still cannot come to terms with it. However, until there's hope and even a 1% chance to save Maciek - we must fight... Help!
