Fundraiser description
URGENT! My name’s Maja, I’m 15 and I have a brain tumour which threatens my life! I’ve been battling it for years and it seemed I’d won… Unfortunately – the tumour residue is growing and taking over the brain areas critical for my life functions! I’m in a lethal danger and Polish doctors are unable to help me further… The time is ticking. I’m scared of what tomorrow brings and that’s why I’m asking you to help me!
Maja’s mum: After the brain tumour had been diagnosed in Maja, I’ve heard words that shouldn’t be heard by any parent. It was said that I should cease saving my child’s life… I won’t give up in my fight for Maja. The tumour is growing and we have to act as quickly as possible and that’s why we need your help so much!

Ever since Maja was born I’ve felt something’s wrong with her… When she was a tiny baby, she started having a cross-eye. Doctors kept telling me that we should wait and everything would be fine. My daughter wouldn’t start crawling for a long time and would get sick very often. Even the smallest cold ended up in a fever. Later on the things started to be worse and worse… Maja would lose her balance. Walking and running proved to be difficult. I was overwhelmed with envy when I was watching other children playing on trampolines… Maja would fall after one jump. She began forgetting songs and nursery rhymes she’d known. When she was 5, I’ve already had two folders full of different tests and still haven’t known what was going on.
After the next outburst of high fever Maja got the referral for a CT scan at the hospital. It was a breakthrough… The test revealed a cyst and other brain changes. The doctor wrote a referral to the hospital in silence and no one has told me from then on that I’m an oversensitive mum. I was well along with my pregnancy then and I wasn’t getting exactly what kind of situation it was. After the MRI I heard that an adult with such results would be already dying… Because of that our life started resembling drifting on an ocean. Either it was a silence before a storm or a heavy gale.
Immediately after her admission to the hospital, Maja was taken to the operation theatre. She had to be decompressed because of the hydrocephaly. There were also changes in the cerebellum. During one of the telephone consultations I heard that Maja would be dying for 10 months and I should stop fighting for her and begin focusing on a child I had in my womb. But event then I knew I would be fighting for both my daughters and I would never give up on any of them!
The tumour couldn’t be removed totally as it was growing into the brain stem. Maja came back home but it wasn’t the end of the problems… There was a sudden deterioration of her health and she urgently needed another operation. Doctors had to save her life! After this difficult period came the calm one. Maja went to the school and made new friends… Subsequent tests haven’t shown any problems. Tumour residue was in her head but it posed no threat. Unfortunately, it changed in time…

A year ago the MRI showed alarming changes for the first time. It turned out that the tumour had activated… The tumour residue has grown and started taking over the brain areas critical for her life functions! In December Maja suddenly started choking. She couldn’t move her head. The tumour is threatening her life! Again, we have to search for help to save Maja!
We haven’t been successful in Poland. No one wants to take on Maja’s operation… The tumour is in such a place that the doctors are afraid that it could lead to her invalidity or death. The only one chance for Maja’s life lays abroad. We have a green light from the Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio where children with serious cases of brain tumour are treated. The American doctors will try to remove the tumour in full and then they will examine it and administer a tumour-targeted chemo. Maja will get a chance to recover!
We still can’t believe that… When consecutive health centres refused to treat Maja, the worst fear appeared – the one about the child’s life. However, the tumour can be removed… We are scared, though, as the tumour is growing and Maja is in danger… If it grows further, the path to the procedure in the USA may close! We will lose the only opportunity we have and we can’t let it happen!
The cost of the operation is enormous. The healthcare in America is the most expensive in the world. We are still waiting for the cost calculation, but we have to act now! We ask kindly for your help to save Maja’s life.
