Surgery is the only solution to let Mateusz walk!

Mateusz is 11 years old. For nine years, he has been putting much effort into being able to walk. He surprised us with new achievements many times, but as he’s grown up, he developed muscle contractures in the legs, which have taken away his abilities. 

Even the most intense physical therapy is ineffective. The only hope to save a gait function is a complex orthopedic surgery combined with strenuous and months-long rehabilitation. 

When Mateusz was two years old, he suffered from encephalitis, which had a severe course. 

As a result, he developed paraplegia, paralysis of the right arm, and muscle contractions that impaired his movement and ability to perform basic activities. Additionally, it all made later health issues worse. These were type 1 diabetes, hypothyroidism, nephrotic syndrome, primary immune disorder, and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). 

Despite the limitations caused by encephalitis and many diseases, Mateusz develops and remains active thanks to his hard work and strenuous, years-long rehabilitation. 

Due to the progress of the disease, intensified spasticity, and contractures in the knee and hip joints, Mateusz must undergo complex surgery. Otherwise, he will lose the physical ability he worked hard for many years and the opportunity to walk! The procedure that is planned in the Belgium clinic not only can save him against disability but also offer him a chance for gait improvement. 

Mateusz is such a happy child, full of energy and passion. He has lots of hobbies. He likes to ride his special bike and loves water and the swimming pool, where he learns how to swim. 

He loves animals and horseback riding and wants to have a dog. 

When he was younger, he dreamt of playing football. He was a member of the wonderful football team for children with disabilities. He even enjoyed the harsh training. However, when the contractures in his leg and pain intensified, he had to give up his football career. 

He is fascinated by books. He likes to read and listen to audiobooks and could spend hours in the library or the bookstore. He also likes to play with Lego bricks and cook. 

We wish he could develop his passions and grow up as an independent, happy person who shares his talents with the world. It seems like we are close to reaching our goal…
