Critical heart defect alert! Only surgery can save Mikolaj! 

We are racing with time! Mikolaj needs heart surgery!

Dear Donors, do you remember Mikolaj? His heart requires urgent surgery. His blood oxygen saturation has lowered again, sometimes dropping below 72! Our son’s heart cannot provide a sufficient inflow of oxygen for his body. Mikolaj becomes weaker day by day. 

His lips and fingers turn purple. Every infection is a life-threatening condition! 

We knew this day would come, but we had no idea it would happen so fast. 

Our son requires another heart surgery as soon as possible. 

He will not survive without it!

Open-heart surgery to rebuild the blood vessel connection between the heart and lungs, called unifocalization, can be a life-saving solution! 

The most traumatic experience is waiting long hours outside the operating room where your child is having surgery, not knowing what the result will be. 

Every heart procedure is risky, but with your support, we can take that risk since it is the only chance for our son! 

We need all hands on deck -  Mikolaj’s life is at stake. The surgery date is set for January 30, and we need to make a payment until January 15.

Why him? Why do I wake up every morning with fear? Why am I scared to enter Mikolaj’s room? That is because his heart is failing. I’m afraid that someday I will see my son dead, and I’m scared that every moment spent with him may be the last. I love him more than anything in the world, but instead of watching him achieve another milestone, I am scared that it might stop one day. As you can see below, my son’s lips are purple, and his face is pale. He has dark circles under his eyes. 

His heart is too weak to provide the suffocating body with enough oxygen! 

It is a ticking time bomb. We never know when it will “explode” and we will be left with anything but broken hearts. 

We used to be happy. It didn’t last long, though. Several weeks after I had learned about my pregnancy, my doctor informed me that my baby would be born with a heart defect—pulmonary atresia with a ventricular septal defect and Major Aortopulmonary Collateral Arteries (MAPCAs). I was heartbroken. I had so many plans, dreams, and hopes. I could not wrap my head around it that my baby might die after birth! How come a woman is given a chance to conceive a child who will die anyway? 

We went through every possible stage—despair, crying, hope, and finally, searching for a solution and consolation! After the diagnosis, the doctors refused to provide us with positive feedback before I gave birth. They told us to wait. I didn’t want to wait that long, though! 

I knew that when my son came into this world, he would be on his own, and his life would depend on others. 

What’s next?

Nine days before my due date, I had to travel to a hospital 100 km away from home because of a mandatory admission to a pathology unit in case anything happened to me or the baby. On January 23, 2018, the doctors decided to induce labor. The next day, at 6:20 am, my son was born. 

I couldn’t touch or kiss him or even see his little face. He was rushed directly to the ICU to undergo life-saving examinations and procedures!  

Two days later, at 10:40 am, Mikolaj was transferred to the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze. I remember that day vividly. A CT was to determine whether heart surgery was necessary. Until that day, we had hoped for a happy ending. However, the doctors took it away from us. We heard that no one could help our baby boy, and the only treatment available in Poland was pharmacological. 

We have kept on waiting. Our son is growing up, and his heart is hardly functioning. 

It is a permanent condition one cannot grow out of. Children with heart problems can either fight for years or die, unaware of their health issues. 

Mikolaj visited the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases already 15 times! 

The doctors always refused to perform surgery. 

Thanks to you, Mikolaj underwent his first LIFE-SAVING HEART SURGERY. 

One day later, the doctors reopened his heart due to post-operative complications. 

He was in critical condition, but you helped improve it!… 

Mikolaj is in stable condition now, but our fight hasn’t finished yet… There is still a lot to do! 

Mikolaj requires third surgery! We already know how much it will cost, but it is the only solution for our son! We are begging for your support! We must be ready to finance the procedure as soon as we receive a decision from the clinic.
