When fate fails, don't let people fail! We save Wiktor's mobility!

Now we should have been complete, healthy and happy. The four of us were to have been enjoying our ordinary everyday life. We didn't expect much from life; health would have been enough, and then we would have been able to do the rest. Our wishes, however, have not been fulfilled...

We were waiting for our son, Wiktor, and believed the doctors who performed the ultrasound scans, who said that everything would be fine. Why shouldn't it be? Unfortunately, after Wiktor was born, it turned out otherwise... The great joy of our baby arriving in the world was mixed with great fear.

I heard from the doctor that something was wrong with my son's feet, and then Wiktor was taken away for further examination. I was left alone with a lot of questions in my head, with tears in my eyes and unimaginable sadness in my heart. Waiting for specific information about Wiktor's condition seemed to last an eternity and no such information was given to us as no one was able to determine what defect our son had been born with - In the 21st century! I left the hospital with the diagnosis that Wiktor had been born with an unspecified malformation of the lower limbs.

Day and night we searched for information on the Internet about lower limb defects in children and eventually discovered the Paley European Institute in Warsaw - an orthopaedic clinic, where Dr. Dror Paley - a world-famous orthopaedist, works. We have followed the stories of many children who have been operated on by this outstanding specialist, and who today now function like any able-bodied child.

A few years ago, young patients had to fly overseas for their chance of hope. Fortunately, Dr. Dror Paley has recently been performing complicated operations in Warsaw, which greatly facilitates the organization of treatment. We have been in consultation with Dr. Paley, who has made a diagnosis and presented a treatment plan. Wiktor was born with a fibular hemimelia defect, which happens in only one in a quarter of a million births. The only solution is surgery, without which Wiktor will never be able to walk on his own. There is no fibula in his right leg, whilst the left one is underdeveloped. Both tibia are bent and the right leg is shorter than the left one. Over time, the disproportion in the length of the legs will worsen. Furthermore, as in most children suffering from tibial hemimelia, Wiktor also has comorbidities such as deformation of his feet, ankles, and the valgus of both knees. Please look at the photos.

Despite the serious deformities in Wiktor's legs, Dr. Paley has given us a 100% guarantee of a cure, under one condition - the initial operation must take place in the first 18-24 months of Wiktor's life. The treatment is to consist of several stages. The first operation will involve straightening the tibia bones in both legs and bringing the foot into the correct position using a procedure called SUPERankle. Thanks to this, Wiktor will have straight legs with feet flat against the ground. The ankle joint will be connected temporarily with wires, which will be removed after 12 weeks. The next step will be to lengthen the legs when Wiktor is about 4 years old.

There is a long and arduous road ahead of us, but we are highly motivated to go along it. Wiktor's entire future, and his independence in adulthood, depends on it! We have to do it for him!

Unfortunately, the monetary cost for our son to be fit and healthy is unimaginably high and far exceeds our financial capabilities.
