The doctors didn't know what to say to the mother! Urgent surgery is his only chance!

Our smiles were broken by tears almost one year ago. Those times are impossible to describe as there were two different realities. We became parents of a child who was different from all the other children in the hospital. Happiness and tragedy at the same time, appreciation and grief …. This is behind us now. In February our child will be 1 year old. He will be trying to stand up. Now, he is trying to stand using one leg but he falls every time he does that. At the moment he does not have a problem with that as he is very young but one day he will notice that all his friends can just stand up and walk while he is still not able to do that.

This one sentence I have had in my mind for months: ‘ there is a problem with his leg’

Maternity units are not places where we expect to hear any bad news… everyone wants to hear that everything is OK., that our child has the maximum apgar score, that our child is beautiful and healthy. This is that one magic moment when you look deeply in the eye of your lovely child. Before I heard these devastating words I had had a few seconds full of joy and happiness.

When I was shown the leg of my son by the doctors all good things seemed to have disappeared. A small deformed foot without one toe, so unnaturally twisted. Even a person who knows nothing about medicine would be able to see that this was a very serious problem. You are not able to walk with such a leg. Have I given a birth to a child who will have to use the wheelchair?

None of the dorctors wanted to tell us that there was nothing we could do. None of them told us that Olek would be able to walk one day… That was the moment when we knew that we had to take some actions. First, we had to find out what secret our son’s leg held. In Poznan our child was diagnozed, he had some tests done and it turned out that he did not have one knee and a fibula .

We were getting more and more scared as nobody wanted to tell us the plan for Olek’s treatment.

We have found a doctor who specializes in such cases. He is a widely known specialist, an american orthopedic surgeon dr Paley . He deals with the most difficult cases. He helps children who were supposed to have amputations, he fixes arms and legs. Thanks to him children start walking. Our Oluś can also have a chance to have a normal life. Dr Paley visits Poland and he performs surgeries in Warsaw in Paley European Institiute. Having heard that we could not wait and we wanted to take advantage of that fact.

There is a lot of positive information about his surgeries on the Internet. So many children who were supposed to be wheelchair- bound can play football now !!!

Such miracles do happen, however, you need a horrendous amount of money and incredible work of best doctors. Dr Paley was watching and analysing Olek’s leg for a long time. The missing bone tured out to be a tibia bone so the first diagnosis was incorrect. The main problem that dr Paley Leeds to deal with during the operations is the knee-joint which has to be created from the very beginning. The next step will be straightening and putting the foot in the right direction and finally extending the whole leg.

Yes, this doctor sees a chance for our child and he tell sus that our child will not have to crawl on the floor just like he has to right now.

This is a huge price for health. We look into his deep blue eyes every day and we know that we have to try to do everything to help him. Thanks to you our dream may come true. At the moment Oluś is moving on the floor with difficulties and it is impossiblefor him to crawl when there are thigns such as a carpet .

Moreover, the older he gets the more problems with moving he will have. It does not have to look that way. Till this spring we must be ready to take some action. This surgery is the biggest chance in our son’s life- the boy who can either lose everything or get a normal life.
