Remigiusz is fighting to regain mobility – HELP!

My Dad has been suffering from a neurodegenerative disease resulting in a progressing muscle atrophy for several years. The first symptoms appeared in 2020 but despite many consultations, there was no definitive diagnosis – the symptoms were simply associated with age.

In 2023, the doctors diagnosed Dad with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) although many symptoms did not much the typical course of the disease. ALS is incurable and for this reason, for many months, my father had been convinced that nothing could be done for him. However, we could not give up and continued consultations with specialists. We paid for many diagnostic tests and financed private rehabilitation, which strained our financial resources.

Recently, there has been a breakthrough, the levels of neurofilament-light chain did not match the SLA. This prompted the doctors to review the case and change the suspected diagnosis to motor neuropathy which, in contrast to ALS, can be treated. Dad has severe disability, uses a wheelchair and is not as self-reliant as he used to be. He was qualified for an urgent neurological rehabilitation but the earliest possible day, when it comes to the services reimbursed by NFZ (National Health Fund), is in February 2026. We cannot wait that long!

We found a private facility that specialises in neurological diseases. Unfortunately, a monthly stay costs more than 20 thousand zlotys. We would like Dad to benefit from at least two stays as this could give him a better chance of improving his health condition. Additionally, we need financial resources to adjust our flat to his current needs, for example to facilitate his access to the bathroom, buy supplementary equipment and continue rehabilitation.

Despite his severe disability, Dad is still professionally active – as a professor, he gives lectures on interior design at the universities in Sopot and Bydgoszcz. He is supported by his students as well as neighbours and family. Before he lost his mobility, he led an active life. He loved skiing, sailing and travelling. He wanted to continue his hobbies after retirement but the disease took that away from him.

We believe that with proper support Dad has a real chance to stop the progression of the disease and regain some mobility. For this reason, we are asking for your help. Each donation is very helpful and gives us hope for a better future. Thank you!
