Every war is sickening and atrocious. Yes, this one feels close to home for me – geographically but also because of my personal experiences and Polish history. Wars destroy lives, families, and communities regardless of where it happens.

Approximately two million people have fled Ukraine by the 11th day of the Russian invasion. This number has been raising fast, and it has been estimated by the UN that the total number of refugees could reach over four million. They left everything behind. Most of them left their loved ones, too. Physically they are safe but emotionally and psychologically they may not feel safe for months or years to come. So far over half of them have found shelter in Poland. Many stays in accommodations provided by ordinary Poles and are supported by non-governmental organisations.

Polish Humanitarian Action/Polska Akcja Humanitarna (PAH -   https://www.pah.org.pl/) is one of the NGOs with a long-standing history of supporting people affected by wars, conflicts, and natural disasters in various places such as Somalia, Iraq or Kenia for example. They have been operating in Ukraine since the armed conflict started in 2014 including establishing permanent missions there. PAH has been providing medications and medical equipment, delivering food and hygiene kits, blankets and sleeping bags and ensuring provision of necessities such as water and safe shelter. They also provide social, legal, and psychological consultations. They support those who are still in Ukraine and also refugees coming to Poland. PAH needs support to be able to support.

I’m fortunate because I run for leisure, I signed up for the Edinburgh marathon for fun, but running should be for leisure and fun, and not to escape war. Please, press the red button and donate*.

The long run has led me through my childhood neighborhood in Poland. Not much has changed. For many, not only childhood neighborhoods but whole cities and villages have got destroyed.
