Madzia is 17 years old; she is happy, creative and full of life. Her biggest dream is to study medicine. Unfortunately she was born with a complex cyanotic heart defect – the Tetralogy of Fallot, along with two other heart defects, which means she is not as active or strong as her peers. She had the first operation on her heart when she was just 3 months old; however her defect is so serious that it requires corrective surgery for the rest of her life.
Currently Madzia has pulmonary valve insufficiency – this means her valve does not close, her right ventricle is getting bigger, she has developed arrhythmia as well as the insufficiency of two further valves. This is why she urgently needs more corrective surgery. Professor Edward Malec has qualified her for a complete replacement of her pulmonary valve as well as other corrective procedures for the other defects. This surgery needs to be performed at the latest by June 2015. However, there is a problem. The operation is not available in Poland in such a short time frame due to the lack of experience and expertise in such procedures. Having the operation in Poland would, because of this, carry substantial risk, however delaying the operation means Madzia will be risking heart failure.
The only chance to save Madzia’s life is to organise an operation abroad! The University Clinic in Münster is one of the most experienced centres in Europe in cardiothoracic surgery. It offers the newest generation of biological heart valves; the TRIFECTA. It was designed to be durable for even tens of years, as opposed to the valves currently available in Poland, which last barely a few before requiring replacement. They also offer the safest method of carrying out the surgery, without stopping the heart! Having the operation in Germany would be a guaranteed success, meaning a chance for Madzia to live a comfortable life full of developing her interests and achieving her goals. However, this is a very expensive option, with the cost of the operation and the post-op stay in Germany reaching 100,000zl. After payment, the waiting time for this operation is around one month.
