LITTLE STAS FIGHTS ONE OF THE MOST AGGRESSIVE CANCER

One can get used to anything. This is often said, but it is not true. Your baby’s crying, the pain and terror you see in His beautiful baby eyes breaks your heart into a million pieces every time, regardless of whether it’s the first week of cancer treatment or next month. The worst thing is that no one guarantees that the therapies will be effective and that our Brave Little Son, who is going through hell, will win the fight against cancer once and for all.

Our fight began in November 2023, when we were hospitalized with our less than one-year-old son Stas due to an infection with high fever. On the day of his planned discharge, Stas underwent an abdominal ultrasound examination, during which we were informed that our little son had a five-centimeter tumor in his abdomen. Our previous world has stopped. Suddenly we found ourselves in a ward no one would ever want to be in – pediatric oncology. After several weeks of tests, our son was diagnosed with one of the most dangerous childhood cancers – stage IV neuroblastoma with extensive metastases to the marrow and bones. Moreover, genetic testing of the tumor showed that he has amplification of the N-MYC gene, the most important unfavorable prognostic factor for cancer causing recurrence and metastasis.

Stas faces very intensive, multi-stage combined treatment: induction chemotherapy, surgery, megachemotherapy, autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation and targeted immunotherapy. So far, our son has received 6 out of 8 cycles of initial multi-drug intensive induction chemotherapy. After completing the treatment, there will be the last stage – vaccines against the recurrence of Neuroblastoma, available only at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York which costs about 2 milion zlotys. This is a non-refundable stage, very expensive, but at the same time necessary so that our son does not have to go through this hell again. We cannot allow the cancer to return and attack twice as hard after treatment.
