Fundraiser description
Wiktor used to be a typical 13-year-old, following his favourite youtubers and riding a bike with his friends to let off steam. Last summer, his dream holiday turned into a nightmare when a water ambulance took him from a sailing boat to a hospital. The diagnosis proved to be a sentence for life… Type 1 diabetes, an incurable, progressive, autoimmune disease which damages the pancreas and leads to widespread complications. From that moment, our daily life is about measuring Wiktor’s blood sugar levels, including at night, a strict diet regime and... our fear, while we wait for the glucometre to display the result.
Wiktor has not come to terms with his illness. He wants things to be back to how they were before. We cannot give him that, much as we would want to. The only available treatment to prevent the damage to the pancreas and to soften the impact of the disease is TREG therapy. It uses the patient’s own cells to counteract the destructive processes. The procedure isolates regulatory T cells (also called Tregs) from the patient’s blood. These cells have the ability to stop the process of the immune system destroying the cells that produce insulin. Unfortunately, the enormously expensive treatment is not available on the Polish public health system.
We can't afford such expensive treatment. Wiktor has been qualified for therapy, but in order for it to work, he must immediately give the first dose of T cells. His qualification is the current month, so we have to collect a huge amount of money by the end of the year. We appeal to anyone who can help to please support us. Even the smallest amount will bring us closer to reaching our goal. We believe many people out there will find it in their hearts to help Wiktor spend his Christmas with hope for a better tomorrow.
