This young doctor suffered a tragic accident❗️Help is urgently needed!

On 20 August 2023, Tom suffered a multi-organ injury due to a fall from a horse! He was on holiday in Uzbekistan at the time, where he was taking part in a hiking trip to the mountains.... He was only 26 years old. He was a doctor in the middle of his postgraduate training in Krakow, a doctor's assistant at the Bochnia County Hospital. A long-awaited holiday ended in a dramatic fight for his life!

The donors from the first fundraising campaign saved Tomek - thanks to your support, an airlift to Poland was possible, where Tomek received professional medical help at the Intensive Care Clinic of the Military Hospital in Krakow. As a result of his head injury, Tomek remained in a coma for many months.... It was a very difficult time. Tomek was unconscious and intubated. However, he fought with all his strength - he is still fighting now!

Initially, awakening and rehabilitation was carried out at the RehStab centre in Limanowa. Tomek stayed there from 27 October to 31 July. After many months of hard work by a team of physiotherapists, neurologists, psychologists, occupational therapists, and thanks to the commitment of his family and friends, Tomek was awakened from his coma. Accompanying Tom in his daily struggles, we witnessed many touching and memorable moments.... His determination helped him to survive all difficulties, it was so good to see his smile again!

Currently, already as an awake person, Tom requires months of expensive rehabilitation. This includes work on the return of function, motor improvements and respiratory rehabilitation. This is a very difficult, time-consuming and expensive stage in the fight for his health. Unfortunately the Polish National Health Fund only reimburses rehabilitation for one month after awakening! And awakening is actually the beginning of his fight that is continuing!

Although Tomek is able to communicate with his surroundings using a printed alphabet and communicators, he is still fully dependent on another person for his daily functioning. 

Since 1 August this year, Tomek has been staying at the Rehamed-Center in Tajęcina. Here he will continue his fight to return to functionality. He still has a tracheostomy and a PEG, but he is doing breathing exercises, he is beginning to make sounds and a speech therapist is starting to introduce food. We have high hopes for this new rehabilitation centre - Tom has exercises 4 times a day, he can make a huge progress!

Unfortunately, the stay is private, you have to pay for it and the cost of a one-month rehabilitation stay is about PLN 35'000 / 8'100 EUR. To this amount one has to add medicines, dressings, means for daily care, specialist medical equipment.... We are very afraid that we will soon run out of money from the previous collection, and the rehabilitation cannot be stopped under any circumstances!

Thanks to the donors, Tom's life was saved, now we are fighting for his recovery and fitness to restore his quality of life before the accident. We are asking for your help... Every donation, even the smallest one, counts, which will bring Tom closer to realising his plans and fulfilling his dreams. Dreams which, for the healthy and fit, are just ordinary everyday life...
