Fight for life, deadly low blood sugar level in a child born a day earlier...With tears in my eyes I go back to these crucifying moments. My world resembled a wasteland and my heart was breaking under the strain of all misfortunes. My daughter was close to death.

For a couple of days, the doctors were fighting for Helen’s life in the NICU. This turn of events was like a thunderstorm in the middle of winter. Completely unexpected. Cerebral palsy is one of our opponents. In a short time the doctors presented us with a scenario of a rare genetic disorder and highlighted that only time can tell what Helen will really achieve. 

Hypotonia restricted her to a great extent. When Helen was 5 months old, she still could not lift her head without assistance and her hands were clenched into fists. I started looking for help. We began intensive rehabilitation and diagnostics. As a first time mum I was heartbroken and lost. But I did not give up. I was fighting for my child’s health like a lioness.

Due to this determination, Helenka made huge progress. She sat up for the first on her own when she was 7 , and last year she attempted crawling. I was crying with happiness!

When Helenka was 3,5 years old she was choking. Nothing was helping. We were admitted to hospital. It was another nightmare that kept me awake at night. She underwent another procedure after which she ended up in the ICU, as the tracheal walls collapsed! We were facing the possibility of a tracheotomy.

But Helen made it. There was a long and intensive rehabilitation process ahead of us because we had to rebuild what was destroyed.

Currently, gastrointestinal issues and scoliosis keep Helen awake at night. She feels stabbing pain in her stomach. She calls for help but there is nothing I can do to reduce her suffering. I would give anything to relieve her pain but I cannot afford specialist medical equipment. The machine recommended by the doctors, a dynamic standing device which stabilizes the core and provides proper load for legs, helps to learn walking but most of all, improves breathing and digestion , costs almost 200 thousand zlotys!

Rehabilitation is the only chance for Helen. It can help make our nights more peaceful, without pain and suffering. Only rehabilitation can help Hela walk again and stop the scoliosis from progressing. I am sincerely asking for support. Despite birth defects and all the difficulties, Helenka is a brave and a cheerful girl. Each, even the slightest donation can help save her health and give her a head start.
