Comprehensive 2D/3D digitization, digital inventory and virtualization of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lviv

The Lviv Cathedral is beautiful, isn't it? The photos, however, do not fully reflect its grandeur and majesty, but thanks to them we can appreciate from all over the world the craftsmanship of the builders who gave it to Lviv. Will it still be standing in its place tomorrow in such a beautiful form? Or will it turn into a pile of rubble as a result of Russian rockets?

Although the main hostilities are currently taking place in the east of Ukraine, its western part is also being shelled by the invader. All it takes is one 'stray' bullet to lose this priceless treasure cherished for generations... Therefore, we have a special responsibility to digitize the entire historical resource of the Latin Cathedral as quickly and effectively as possible before its irreversible destruction.

The Foundation for Virtualization of the National Heritage of Culture has already decided in 2021 to carry out a comprehensive 2D/3D digitization, digital inventory and virtualization of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lviv (known as the Latin Cathedral).

The first stage of work was carried out in September. However, due to the wealth of resources and the level of advancement of digitization and virtualization work (12 tasks, including laser scanning of the entire architecture of the church, 3D optical scanning of sculptural forms, making gigapanoramas and gigapixels with a resolution of more than 1 billion pixels, developing digital inventory documentation and a virtual tour, building a web application available for any type of multimedia, including virtual reality goggles), our foundation is not able to finance the entire task on its own, the estimated cost of which is 385 thousand zloty (about 90 thousand usd).
