Campaign description

Many families are experiencing extreme poverty in Ethiopia. Like most families living in Ethiopian rural towns, families who live in Bilbala are living without a proper home and go hungry. Jobs are scarce and low paying at best. All it takes is one natural disaster to plunge a family on the edge into a desperate future. When it comes to schooling, education is hard to come by when your belly is asking for food.

Economic and Political instabilities around the world like, COVID-19, the ongoing War between Ukraine and Russia have tremendously affected developing countries, especially countries in East Africa like Sudan, Somalia, Djibouti, Kenya, Eritrea, and Ethiopia.

More than 8 million people are now at risk of starvation in Ethiopia due to drought alone, with estimates of those starving due to internal conflict exceeding 10 million. These are huge numbers, straightforward to imagine. Such numbers often cause helplessness, for what is our modest aid in the face of them. But one must not fall into apathy; any help, even the most modest, can change someone's life.

With the help of donors living in Europe, we at Abisynia Foundation continue to provide food aid to villagers near Lalibela, Ethiopia, (A city built as the second Jerusalem in the 12th century – famous for its rock-cut churches). We are implementing the aid through village schools. We have donated to as many students as possible, a minimum of 15 kg of grain per person. Sometimes it is sorghum, sometimes wheat or barley depending on the price of the local market.

The current level of food prices in Ethiopia is beyond the financial means of the poorest. A year ago, when we donated for families living in Bilbala and were affected by COVID- 19, we were paying 12 ETB (around 0.25 USD) for a kilogram of sorghum, recently 41 ETB (around 0.8 USD) for 1 kg of sorghum. Due to high inflation in the country, people living under poverty are standing firm in faith.

The global food crisis caused by the war in Ukraine has also affected Ethiopia. Food prices have risen catastrophically. The war and drought in Ethiopia have reduced yields of local cereals, it has become apparent that, paradoxically, the best option will be to buy wheat.

The Abyssinia Foundation, together with the people of Lalibela and surrounding areas in Ethiopia expresses its immense gratitude to all donors for the funds donated to purchase the grain. We encourage you to donate, every penny counts!
