Fundraiser description

It was Saturday, the 9th of August. I was with my father Bartosz in the mountains, to check the new bike trails that had just been opened in Wisła. We have been riding our bicycles for many years, I never expected such tragedy. It had changed the life of our father and the entire family...

During our ride, Dad unexpectedly flew through the bicycle handlebar. When he fell, the bicycle was laying on him. I ran to him quickly and what I saw was dreadful: Dad’s mouth was open, there was no contact with him and his nose was damaged! He was wearing helmet and protective gear so he must have hit the ground in a very unfortunate manner...

The fight for his life started! Fortunately, there were many people around and they instantly rushed to help us. Together, we started resuscitation. We were performing it for 40 minutes before a helicopter arrived. This difficult memories will stay with me forever but the most important thing is that we were able to save Dad!

One of the people who were helping to save Dad, gave me a lift to the hospital in Sosnowiec. I had been waiting for an hour without any information and then, at last, I was allowed to enter the room. Dad was unconscious and on a ventilator and numerous IV drips. In that moment, I realized what happened...

For the first two weeks we were always by his side but there was no contact with him. We were informed that his spinal cord was damaged but the extent of this damage was unknown. Additionally, his ribs were broken. When he was unconscious, he also had pneumonia.

After two weeks, there was a spark of hope. Dad regained consciousness! We know that he can hear and see. He smiles, blinks and rolls his eyes. We cannot speak because of tracheotomy. Unfortunately, the ventilator is still necessary, and the attempts to disconnect it were not successful. He has been in hospital closer to us, in Lublin, for a week.

Dad is suffering from quadriparesis caused by the damage of the second cervical vertebra (C2). In other words, he is paralysed. We believe that he will be able to fight for his mobility. Currently, verticalisation and intensive rehabilitation are not possible due to the ventilator.

Soon, he will be placed in a residential medical care facility. Unfortunately, the cost of it is very high. Additionally, we would like to buy CyberEye which would allow Dad to communicate with his eyes. Dad is conscious and communicates with us but he is entrapped in his damaged body. For this reason, he also needs therapy with a neuropsychology as he is at the risk of suffering from the locked-in syndrome.

Together with my Mum Joanna and sister Małgosia, we are asking for help for Dad. We would do anything to provide the best care for him and to give him a chance to come back to us. But to make it possible, we need enormous financial means. Thank you in advance for all donations!
