Fundraiser description
It is very difficult to ask for help. We have never thought that a tragedy like this could happen to a person close to us. Our beloved Basia faced death in an instance. Since then, she has been fighting for every single breath, move and for the chance to get back to her regular life. And we are fighting together with her.
On 14 January, Basia underwent a brain aneurysm embolisation procedure. It was a procedure, not a surgery. It seemed to be just a formality. But life is unpredictable and Basia learned this the hard way. There were complications – haemorrhage, large haematoma pressing on the brain and an immediate life-saving surgery. A part of her skull was removed and we were told that she was in a critical condition – that she might not live through the next hours! Our lives stopped.
Basia was in a drug-induced coma and we were waiting for a miracle. We know Basia, we knew she is strong. We believed that she can wake up and everything is going to be fine. Many weeks have passed. Basia survived but she did not wake up. The doctors defined her state as a vegetative one. Many facilities did not give her any chance or hope. She was not qualified for rehabilitation due to the ventilator. At last, she was admitted to a care home.
In June, after almost six months, a miracle happened! Despite the paralysis, Basia started opening her eyes and moving her right hand. She also spoke her first words. Quietly, with hesitation and not very clearly but consciously. She remembered everything. She knew what happened and where she was.
Our brave fighter started a new stage of her life then. Every day, she has been exercising with specialists despite the fact that it is not easy for her. Basia can move her hand and leg, she can reach for objects on her own, wipe her mouth and she learns to speak again. She has to be on a ventilator but we hope that it will not be necessary soon. We strongly believe that she will learn to breathe on her own and become stronger.
Basia has already finished two rehabilitation cycles and made huge progress. We are very proud of her. There is a long and very expensive road ahead of her. Rehabilitation stays, specialist care, equipment, transport – the costs are huge, and we are not able to bear them on our own.
Basia had been always helping others – today, she needs support herself. For this reason, we are asking with all our heart, please, help Basia. Together we can give her a chance for the necessary rehabilitation and a decent life. Each form of support gets her closer to mobility, independence and regaining hope. We are thankful for any kind of support, good word and belief that everything is going to be fine.
