Lymphoblastic leukemia type B

Started: 03 November 2020
Ends: 24 November 2020

We have been locked in a hospital for a few months now, fighting for a life on the oncology ward. Nadia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia type B – very rare and severe… Standard intense treatment did not work, the disease is spreading and there is little time left…

Currently, the only chance to defeat it is the CAR-T Cell therapy that would train Nadia’s system to fight against the cancer. The cost is horrendous however and we need help. Every day counts…

Spring 2020 – a very difficult time for everybody due to the pandemics. We are told to stay indoors, which we thought was the reason for Nadia’s apathy. Unfortunately, each day she faded away with less and less energy. Walks that she so liked, all of a sudden made her tired after just a few steps. I got scared and took her to a clinic, where they checked her blood.

It was Friday and I was to come back on Monday for a follow up. The same day, however, they called me back and told me it might be cancer. Her test results were really bad so we went straight to a hospital. Due to the pandemic we had to wait for a long time before any tests were made. She was transferred to yet another hospital in the middle of the night for another series of tests and was finally given a diagnosis, the worst possible one.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia type B – a rare and aggressive type, resistant to standard treatment. Radical steps had to be made immediately. She was taken to Przylądek Nadziei clinic in Wroclaw for intense steroid treatment. Our whole family life moved to the hospital. Nadia’s brother spent weeks at a time in the hospital, playing with her and cheering her up.

Steroids did help, but they were insufficient. Over 18% of Nadia’s marrow was still infected when we heard something that hit us like a truck – Nadia has a rare gene preventing full remission. It was decided to use a very expensive treatment in three 28-day cycles. We had hoped to hear good news soon, but unfortunately…

Cancer came back. We weren’t able to get a remission and the planned transplant had to be cancelled. Traditional treatment can’t fight against the gene.

The disease is advancing, currently, Nadia is under maintenance chemotherapy and the doctors say the only chance she has is the new CAR-T therapy, only introduced in Poland one year ago. After extracting cells from the patient, they are reprogrammed to kill the cancer cells. The problem is the price – almost $370,000 !

We have very little time! The last few months have shown us how relentless the disease is. This is the final effort, one that determines whether Nadia survives. Please, help us! Nadia is only 7, it’s not an age to say our goodbyes!
