Leon Rutkowski
He fought for his life, suffering from necrotizing enterocolitis. Today he needs rehabilitation.
Leon, my little son, is a small but mighty miracle. From his first moments of life, he fought with all his strength. He did not give in to adversity and won the most precious gift of all – life. But…
He came into the world far too early — at 29 weeks of pregnancy — and immediately had to face enormous challenges. From his very first breath, he fought for his life, suffering from necrotizing enterocolitis, a condition that could have taken him away from us. When sepsis struck, his chances of survival dropped to less than 2%.
The disease ravaged his tiny body, leading to multi-organ failure. For more than two weeks, Leon was in a medically induced coma, connected to a ventilator, with his life hanging by a thread. Like a cruel domino effect, it caused bleeding in his brain and cerebellum, which in turn led to stationary hydrocephalus and vision damage. At just two months old, Leon underwent eye surgery, and another procedure took place in 2023.
Leon Rutkowski
Every doctor we visited was shocked to see the enormous stack of medical documentation. Today, Leon is 3 years old. He cannot walk and needs to wear orthoses. He does not speak, and his sensory integration and psychomotor development are significantly delayed. Without intensive therapy, our little boy may never stand on his own…
He is under the constant care of a neurologist, ophthalmologist, physiotherapist and speech-language therapist, and we regularly attend sensory integration sessions as well. Every day is a fight to help Leon reach his full potential, but this care comes with enormous costs.
Leon Rutkowski
In the UK, obtaining help for such an extremely premature child is a tremendous challenge. Leon cannot afford to wait eight weeks between therapy sessions or to see a doctor once a month only to receive a few exercises to do at home. Time is slipping away, and without private rehabilitation and costly appointments, we would not be where we are today.
Despite all our efforts, we are still fighting for Leon’s future — for his independence. With only my husband’s single income, the financial burden is overwhelming. The costs often exceed our budget, forcing us to struggle for every pound while living in a rented home.
One month of intensive rehabilitation is an expense we simply cannot cover on our own. We are reaching out for help to all those who have a bit of kindness in their hearts and are willing to support parents fighting for their child. You have supported us once before — we are asking for your help once again. Every day we fight for a better tomorrow for Leon. We believe that with your support, he can achieve the independence we dream of so deeply.
