The war between Ukraine and Russia is not a quarrel in a far-away country, between people of whom we know nothing. Ukraine is the biggest country in Europe, which is bravely defending its own freedom. This impacts all of us in some way and many people will suffer greatly.
I don’t really get involved much on social media, but this war directly affects the country me and my husband come from, Poland, it directly affects our family and friends. Over 300.000 refugees have fleed to Poland since 24th February and there are more and more every hour. The Polish government and ordinary people are doing whatever is in their power to help. People are offering to share their own houses, bringing food, medicines, toys for kids etc. Our family members who are living in Poland are also organising places for refugees to stay in, even though they don’t live directly by the border. It takes about 8,5 hours for them to drive to get to Ukrainian’s border so literally the whole country is helping.
Polish people do this as they know themselves how it is being in a war and getting no help (like it happened during Word War II) and how it is living under an occupation of a hostile country. Me and my husband, we were born under the soviet occupation. We were 8 when the last occupant left our country, Poland. As kids we didn’t have access to all the goods that kids in Western Countries had, Poland was not able to develop for years, our parents and grandparents had to buy food using rationing cards and we were getting a banana and a few oranges as Christmas presents as it was not possible to buy them on a daily basis. This sounds insane but this was our reality. Everything has changed massively since and we don’t want anyone else having to go through the same horrible issues in our modern world. We understand why Ukrainians are so desperately protecting their freedom and they deserve help as they are the same as we are. They fight for themselves and for all of us.
Because we are living in the UK, far away from the Polish-Ukrainian border, and we can’t go there to help, my husband decided to start a donation. He started a collection in his work today and many of his work colleagues took part and donated. We were not surprised as we know they are all great people, and they support others. Few of them had approached us to ask if we could do it on our private social media so they can share the link with their friends. We think this is amazing and it has warmed our hearts. Thank you all.

Every pound paid here, is money well spent. Your money will be invested in anything those fantastic kids, their mothers and grandmothers might need.
